Beau has created a visual narrative of women's lives...those issues which women have dealt with for centuries. Issues such as war and occupation, of depression and domestic violence, of rape, kidnapping and murder. These issues are issues which our mothers and grandmothers, our aunts and cousins, our sisters and daughters and friends have dealt with through their own personal strength, valor, tenacity and courage.
But Beau has shifted her commentary work to focus on the reality of womanhood. It is the issues of the mature women, of body positivity and empowerment, the moments of joy and wonderment and the concept of masking to explore the degree to which women reveal or obscure themselves as they navigate the world. This is a closer look at the struggle, strength, vulnerability and community of the female experience.
Thank goodness we are now in the mindset of body positivity!
Quiet moments of meditation...something we all need every day!
First look at something or someone can be misleading. These assemblages address some of our snap judgements.
Such exuberance seen during carnival! It is the celebration period before the fasting season of Lent. Fat Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Tuesday... Rio Carnival, New Orleans Mardi Gras.
Decoding the non verbal language, allows the painting to view this café life and a story unfolds
The heart and soul of a person...benevolence, compassion, humanity, love, sensitivity. When you experience a skirmish, a struggle, a conflict with your heart, it can be impactful, to say the least. For good or for bad!
The Mature Woman. She is cultivated, sophisticate, and in full bloom! She is seasoned by decades and has found her voice.
Empowerment is self-determination. It is the understanding that you have power to make your choices. We act on our own authority to become strong and confident.
War! Why does one leader, one country try to take away the freedoms from others? Why? The latest war is Putin's War in Ukraine, invading a sovereign country. The war continues. Russia is being pushed back but still targets civilians and breaks all international humanitarian rules.
In July, 2022, the White House hosted the fourth convening of the Trilateral Working Group on Violence Against Indigenous Women and Girls with our partners of Mexico and Canada. It focuses on prevention efforts, increased support for survivors and regional coordination to better address root causes that increase vulnerability to all forms of gender-based violence. Many of my paintings are focused on the unreported kidnapping and murder of these women and girls. At least now, there is more awareness and progress is being made.
Domestic violence can take many forms, not just physical & sexual violence but also emotional, financial, verbal threats. Abusive relationships always involve an imbalance of power and control. Several of my paintings and assemblages deal with aspects of domestic violence. On one piece titled "Why Did I Stay? My Hidden Memories Reappear" has scrabble pieces on the bottom. If you lay them out correctly, it says "domestic violence". This may suggest that it is just a game....but it is deadly serious.
Face Masks...it is a form of disguise or concealment. This characteristic of hiding and revealing personalities. It may offer a new identity. In my mask series from the early 2000s suggest the wearer is both hiding and revealing, or the masks are used as questions.
Our Tribe of Sisters...it is a powerful community of like minded women with a common interest in creating positive outcomes. We offer support, encouragement, mentoring, love & caring and encourage freedom. The Sisterhood empowers and heals. We value the specialness of each person as a gift. Many of my assemblages focus on our independent thought with our voices heard.
Each mother's journey through the stages of motherhood look slightly different.
